Our very own Chip Freeman won the fourth annual Gu

Our very own Chip Freeman won the fourth annual Gumbo Cook-Off contest at @ecustabrewing last night 👏🏼

Winners were selected by the 200+ attendees who sampled Gumbo creations by both amateurs and professionals.

Tickets and raffle proceeds were donated to Almost Home Dog Rescue NC, @almosthomedogrescuenc .

The third image shows Chip Freeman unloading a delicious batch of shrimp during our 2022 Annual Oyster Roast. Chip also cooked the Brunswick Stew at this event (we’ve always known he was talented!)

We are so proud to have Chip on our team and applaud his big win at the Gumbo Cook-Off!

Located approximately 11 miles, or 21 minutes from our office (100 Waterfall Circle, Lake Toxaway, NC 28747).⁠

Whitewater falls is the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. The falls plunge 411 feet. The land is a perfect haven for a rich array of ferns, mosses, and fungi (information from USDA Forest Service). ⁠

If you are viewing Lower Whitewater Falls during winter, when the leaves are down from the trees, the wreckage of a plane will be visible on the mountainside to the left of the falls. In the early 1970's, two couples died while trying to get a good view of the falls from the air (information from our hiking guide). ⁠

The Western North Carolina Times ran a story about the "Beautiful Sapphire Country" with this account of scaling Mt. Toxaway. 120 years have passed since this story ran and yet, it is as relevant today as it was then. ⁠

"Next morning we take the road to the mountain, and after a drive of some three or four miles find ourselves high up in the world and eventually reach the top of Hogback or Toxaway mountain, and find that we have left a good deal of the world below us and have emerged on to a little table land from which we may hold converse, as it were, with the giant mountains miles and miles away on every side. Chimneytop, Whitesides, the Balsams, and Pisgah and the distant Black mountains rise up to greet us as we reach the majesty and mystery of the higher world. The cloud shadows travel athwart the hillsides and the flitting mist below and around us, remnants of the recent rain, alternating with the sunlight, produce a lovely, dappled effect as they rise and silent pass on." ⁠

Happy Fall everyone! The Autumnal Equinox begins today. ⁠
The changing color of the leaves paints a breathtaking image where the green landscape transitions to shades of yellow, orange and crimson. We are so lucky to live in a place where we are able to see this take place! Predictions conclude Lake Toxaway will see peak foliage color around the third to fourth week of October.⁠

On the second slide, we are sharing some of the best places to view Autumn color provided by @romanticasheville ‘s “Fall Color Forecast 2022, Asheville & NC Mountains”. This timeline was created by tracking foliage peak times (and the best places to view them) over the past 15 years. Head to their site to learn more about fall events, best photo spots, and leaf viewing tips. ⁠

On the third slide, we are sharing a Fall Color Peak Map provided by the Department of Biology at Appalachian State University, @appstate. This map shows the estimated times of fall color peaks for various regions of North Carolina. Neufeld and Denslow based these predictions on the effects of both elevation and latitude.⁠

In 1916, the Toxaway Dam burst, spilling 5.3 billion gallons of water down the gorge. All vegetation was stripped away, and residents reported seeing a 30-foot-tall wave of water that left debris nearly 4 miles downstream. This created the widely exposed bedrock we see at the falls today.
